Enova has allocated NOK 391 million to support GreenH’s hydrogen facilities in Bodø, Kristiansund, and Slagentangen near Tønsberg.
As part of the “Hydrogen Production for Maritime Transport 2027” program, Enova SF announced on Tuesday, November 5, that GreenH will receive funding to build three hydrogen production facilities along Norway’s eastern, western, and northern coastlines.
“We at GreenH are incredibly pleased and proud to have won the competition for Enova funding. Now we have the opportunity to deliver green hydrogen directly to ships, trucks, and other transport from facilities located close to where it will be used. Our facilities in Bodø, Kristiansund, and Slagentangen near Tønsberg will contribute to a network of ports for hydrogen production and bunkering along the coast,” says Morten Solberg Watle, CEO of GreenH.
Enova allocated a total of NOK 777 million to five different projects. In addition to GreenH’s three projects in Bodø, Kristiansund, and Slagentangen near Tønsberg, funding was also awarded for hydrogen facilities in Florø and Egersund.
– Hydrogen is needed as an alternative fuel to cut emissions.
“This initiative is unique on a global scale, with the Norwegian maritime sector leading the way once again. If we succeed, we will not only lay the foundation for taking the Norwegian maritime industry to zero emissions. This effort can also contribute to transformation throughout Europe and the world, as Norwegian shipowners operate with their vessels and technologies across all continents,” says Climate and Environment Minister Tore O. Sandvik (Ap).
Establishing these facilities and technologies will help create a healthy and cost-effective market for hydrogen-powered transport in Norway.
“Hydrogen is one of the fuels of the future, but before we can see a large-scale rollout, the technology must be demonstrated multiple times, and the market must be built. Our facilities will be among the first in the world to transfer hydrogen directly from production sites to ships, thereby reducing transport costs. Enova’s support makes it possible to build now and establish a mature market 5 to 10 years earlier than it would have developed without funding,” says Solberg Watle.
Enova’s support aims to establish the first functioning hydrogen value chain in Norway, serving as a springboard for further development. The goal is for hydrogen to become a more accessible and sustainable fuel option, also economically.
“The supported projects will become part of a network of hydrogen producers along the Norwegian coast, from Slagentangen in the southeast to Bodø in the north. This will make hydrogen more accessible for those looking to invest in sustainable shipping,” says Nils Kristian Nakstad, CEO of Enova.
