GreenH receives approximately 250 million NOK in support to build a hydrogen plant in Hammerfest. The company can thus proceed with the project once buyers are in place.
On Tuesday, May 20, it was announced that GreenH’s project in Hammerfest won the EU hydrogen auction. The grant is provided through the EU budget for hydrogen production for maritime transport, and amounts to 21.9 million euros, equivalent to approximately 250 million NOK.
“The grant is a great recognition of the project work Hammerfest Municipality and GreenH have done together. We have been working on this for a while, and we are very pleased that we are getting approval from the EU. We are still in an early phase, but the project perfectly fits into GreenH’s strategy of offering green hydrogen at hubs along the coast, where consumption occurs,” says Petter Olsen Bertheussen, regional manager for Northern Norway at GreenH.

We have been working on this for a while, and we are very pleased that we are getting approval from the EU.
GreenH and Hammerfest Municipality have been collaborating on the project since fall 2024.

“A new hydrogen plant can mean a lot for Hammerfest. Green transition should also happen in the far north and offers new opportunities in industrial and business development. Now it is time for national politicians to get involved and stimulate zero-emission solutions,” says Mayor Terje Rogde of Hammerfest Municipality.
The company points to the Coastal Route tender and ship traffic related to the oil and gas industry as potential buyers of hydrogen from a plant in Hammerfest.
“The support gives us a tremendous opportunity to build the plant, but we must be sure that shipowners want to bunker hydrogen in Hammerfest. In this regard, we are closely monitoring whether there will be requirements for zero-emission ships in the Coastal Route tender that will be released soon. It is also very interesting if the supply boats for the oil and gas industry in Hammerfest will switch to zero emissions and need green hydrogen,” says Bertheussen.
